CURVE at Georgia State University Library

A Haivision video wall system helped Georgia State University Library create an immersive, interactive visualization center that transformed the learning experience. The interact wall supports student research and fosters collaborative learning on campus, reinforcing the Library’s role as the heart of the GSU community.

About the Client

The GSU Library plays a central role on campus, supporting teaching, learning, and research and providing a social space for the university community. In recent years, the University Library has progressively embraced digital collections and research tools alongside traditional print materials in order to create a dynamic, interactive learning environment.

The Challenge

In 2013, the Georgia State University Library began planning a new space that would further advance its educational resources. The Collaborative University Research & Visualization Environment, or CURVE, would be an interactive research center where students and faculty could visualize information on a large, ultra-high-resolution display.

In order to realize their vision, the University Library would need to implement a powerful, highly-integrated video wall system. The system would require robust capabilities to support research, including the ability to render massive data sets from a wide range of operating systems. However, it would also need to be intuitive enough to be operated by students of all disciplines with varying levels of technical expertise. In addition, it was important that the video wall system be interactive and responsive so that it would create an engaging, collaborative environment.

After exploring a number of options, the University Library chose Haivision to implement the CURVE video wall system. Haivision was selected because of its proven visualization technology and ability to implement highly-customized solutions. Furthermore, as both manufacturer and integrator, Haivision was equipped to create a fully-integrated, turn-key video wall solution tailored to the unique needs of the University Library.

The Solution

To bring the Collaborative University Research & Visualization Environment to life, Haivision worked closely with Georgia State to create a highly-customized advanced visualization system.

An Interactive, Multi-HD Display System

For the display system, Haivision provided an LCD video wall, a freestanding 6×2 array of touch panels with a combined resolution of 11520 x 2160. One of the largest touch walls built to date, it delivered an interactive experience and displayed content from Linux, Mac, and Windows operating systems, allowing students from all disciplines to dynamically engage with their data. Haivision worked directly with University IT to design a fiber optic infrastructure for the system, connecting the video wall via native fiber optic cables to a processor two floors below.

In addition to the video wall, Haivision provided an 84” 4K workstation. The 4K workstation served as a separate break-out space where students could leverage the same functionality provided by the video wall system. Connected to a custom-built PC, the 4K display provided touch interactivity and could run research software at ultra-HD resolution. Students could easily share material on the 4K workstation by mirroring the content on the video wall.

Extreme Processing and Rendering Power

For the processor, Haivision provided an Alpha video wall processor. The Alpha was able to accept video, 3D renderings, massive data sets, and more from Linux, Mac, and Windows workstations, placing the content on the displays at native resolution. Haivision worked with University IT to optimize the center’s PCs, Linux computers, and Macs for display on the video wall. In conjunction with the touch wall, the Alpha gave students the ability to fully visualize and interact with information that was previously only visible in segmented parts.

User-Friendly Software

To make the system both intelligent and user-friendly, Haivision provided a two-tiered software solution. For researchers exploring ultra-high-resolution material, CineNet software provided an interactive experience and allowed content sources to be manipulated in real-time across the displays. CineNet provided features such as drag-and-drop placement of content, zooming and cropping of individual content sources, custom layouts, and more. For students with more basic needs, the streamlined Touch Control interface allowed them to push content to the video wall with the touch of a finger.

24/7 Support

As the final component of the turnkey visualization solution, Haivision provided the GuardianCare 24/7 Protection Program. GuardianCare included preventative maintenance and offered both phone and on-site support to ensure the health and longevity of the video wall system. It also provided access to new CineNet features and upgrades, allowing CURVE’s visualization technology to continue to develop over time.

The Benefits

By implementing a Haivision visualization system in CURVE, the University Library created an immersive, interactive visualization center that transformed the learning experience. The system, named the interactWall, not only supported student research, but also fostered collaboration and excitement, cementing the University Library as a pivotal part of the Georgia State community.
