The Client​

The US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, is a scientific agency within the US Department of Commerce that studies the conditions of the oceans and atmosphere. NOAA’s functions include the study of changes in climate, weather, and oceans; the education of the public on environmental issues; and the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems.

The Challenge

NOAA needed a video wall system that could serve a dual role. On a day-to-day basis, the system would function as digital signage, displaying pre-recorded educational content to visitors. During internal briefings, the system would play a more interactive role, rendering ultra-high-resolution maps and models. NOAA also wanted the ability to capture and display video from various content sources simultaneously.

The Solution

To meet NOAA’s requirements, Haivision designed and built a custom solution that could render ultra-high-resolution content in real-time as well as displaying pre-scheduled video productions.

For the display, Haivision provided an LCD video wall in a 3×3 configuration. The multi-HD canvas provided sharp, bright image quality and a wide viewing angle.

To control the system, Haivision provided the Bravo Viz, an ultra-high-resolution content rendering engine. The Bravo Viz was able to output content of resolutions up to 5760×3240, enabling NOAA to display its 3D maps, models, and renderings at native resolution. The processor could also capture and display up to four HD video sources simultaneously, allowing content from DVD players, cameras, laptops, and workstations to be arranged on the wall.

Along with the Bravo Viz, Haivision provided a multi-monitor digital signage software package. Unlike most digital signage solutions, the software did not require the video wall to be scaled to down the resolution of a single display. Instead, content could be displayed at native resolution or scaled and positioned anywhere on the wall. Haivision also included a media player capable of rendering video across multiple displays without the need for additional gen-locking hardware.

By leveraging Haivision video wall technology, NOAA implemented a versatile display system with a broad range of capabilities. The agency’s hybrid digital signage and visualization system continues to serve a focal point for visitors and a powerful tool for employees.
